I have heard of stories where one person ate a bag of chips and gained five pounds while another person ate 5 bags of chips and gained no pounds. Are you the one who gains weight or stays the same? Do you know of a friend that eats and eats and never gains weight while you eat conservatively and still gain pounds? This may be due to a hormone called orexin.

There is a new study that shows that a deficiency in orexin can lead to more weight gain. This study was conducted on mice and mice that lacked orexin gained more weight when they were fed a high-fat diet. Mice that had orexin did gain weight, but not as quickly as the mice that did not have orexin.

Researchers are currently saying that one way to help people lose weight is to supplement the body with artificial hormones of orexin. However, keep in mind that this is a new study and more studies need to be done before they can conclude that orexin supplements can help people lose weight.

The orexin hormone helps to keep weight off because it is responsible for the production of brown fat that helps to burn of calories, contrary to white fat that just gets stored. So, mice that did not have orexin were doomed to be obese, while mice that did have orexin produced brown fat to help eliminate excess weight.

When mice were fed the high-fat diet, mice without orexin increased their weight by 45%. Mice with orexin only gained 15%. For a surprising twist, mice that were lacking orexin also ate less food and still gained more weight. Mice with orexin also increased their metabolic rate when they were switched to a high-fat diet while orexin-deficient mice had no change in their metabolism.
